Brandon Chamber Announces 2nd Annual Lemonade Day

UPDATE: March 24, 2024 – Updated to include information about including Flowood (39232) in Lemonade Day Brandon MS, as well as an additional Workshop (April 11, 2024 at Northwest Rankin High School in Flowood).

March 9, 2024, BRANDON MS – The Brandon Chamber has announced their 2nd annual Lemonade Day® event, slated for May 4, 2024. Lemonade Day® is a large, robust youth entrepreneurship project, and a perfect opportunity for learning and entrepreneurial skills training for youth. The Lemonade Day® program was started in Houston TX in 2007 and has since expanded to more than 100 cities nationwide, with over one million youth partipating over the years. Brandon is currently only the 2nd active Lemonade Day® community in the state of Mississippi. Starkville MS also operates the Lemonade Day® program, and does so regionally as the Lemonade Day® Golden Triangle, in conjuction with Mississippi State University.

The goal of Lemonade Day® is to give all children the opportunity to learn to make money through their own business, so they can “spend a little, save a little, and share a little.” All profits created by the lemonade stands are the child’s to keep. Lemonade Day® isn’t just “a day”, as it’s a teaching and learning experience. The process teaches kids basic business fundamentals and vocabulary via workshops, as well as lessons in a mobile application or workbook. The process is a fun, relationship building event that culminates in the actual day of official Lemonade Day®.

Brandon’s 2024 Lemonade Day® will be Saturday May 4, 2024. You’ll be able to see a map online, which notates all the lemonade stands in the Brandon community. In 2023, Brandon Chamber’s first instance of Lemonade Day®, 40+ lemonade stands were setup all over town by young entrepreneurs. The Chamber is hoping for even more in 2024. Brandon citizens are encouraged to show support for these entrepreneurs by visiting several stands, and buying delicious lemonade from area youth. The ages of children partipating varies, but are typically between the ages of 6 and 12.

Nearly all the lemonade stands that weekend will be setup in front of small businesses. Participating kids learn real business skills, including signing a one-day lease with the business location for their stand, getting a micro-loan via a bank sponsor, a permit from the City of Brandon, as well as workshops on the entire process.

Brandon Chamber President, Mr. Lance Stevens, said “We’re excited that our Chamber is able to bring Lemonade Day® to the community for the 2nd straight year. We’re extremely thankful for the generous support of our sponsors, including Community Bank, the City of Brandon, RCC Roofing & Construction, Planet Fitness, Raising Cane’s, Flowood Chamber, and many more. With the lessons provided in the program, the involvement of the City of Brandon with a kid-friendly permit process, and real business concepts, we’re looking forward to having a positive impact on even more youth in the area in 2024. We are expecially thrilled this year to be able to bring this to Flowood and zip code 39232, with the help of our friends at the Flowood Chamber.”

If you have a child between 6 and 12 years old, you should look into the program, and consider registering your child. Registration is completely FREE. A stand may be operated by 1 child, or with multiple children. In 2023, most stands were run by 2 kids, with several run by 3 or 4 kids. Registration links and more are provided at the end of this article. According to Lemonade Day® City Director, Ms Melissa Skaggs, the response to the project here in Brandon has been enormous. “The impact this program has on youth is enormous. We’re looking foward to helping kids succeed and setting a foundation of business learning that will last long after this event.”

Brandon Chamber will be hosting three identical Workshop Fairs for kids and families. The first Workshop Fair will be held on Saturday March 23, 2024 at Brandon High School. The second Workshop Fair is scheduled for Thursday April 11, 2024 at Northwest Rankin High School in Flowood. The third Workshop is scheduled for Tuesday April 16, 2024. At each of the workshops, kids and parents will get a thorough introduction to Lemonade Day®, and gain knowledge on the following:

  • Basic financial skills and understanding your lease
  • Basic marketing of a stand
  • Getting and understanding your micro-loan from our bank sponsor
  • City permit process

In addition to prize drawings at the Workshop Fairs, there are lots of prizes and opportunities for fun with the program. In 2023, participating kids enjoyed free swimming at Crossgates Pool, a free pizza party at The Cleaners by Pizza Shack, and lots of prizes including:

  • Best Lemonade Stand
  • Best Marketing
  • Best Tasting Lemonade
  • Entrepreneur of the Year

In order to qualify for a micro-loan and prizes, participants MUST attend one of the Workshop Fairs. Keep in mind, kids may qualify for a micro-loan of $50 from our bank sponsor. If they pay the micro-loan back, our bank sponsor will even deposit the amount of the loan into the child’s account at the bank, if the parent elects to open an account at the bank for the child.
