Brandon Bests Hernando 5-2 In Game one of 7A Championship Series

BRANDON MS – May 21, 2024 – By Jake Wimberly – It’s been 57 years since the Brandon Bulldogs won their only state championship in baseball, but on Tuesday night, in front of a Trustmark Park crowd, full of red and black wearing Brandon fans, the Bulldogs inched one game away from a state championship – knocking off Hernando 5-2.

Bulldog fans took over Trustmark Park in Pearl, and Daniel Best’s Bulldogs took over the Tigers from Hernando on a great night for baseball. Two Ole Miss signees took to the hill for both programs, in a pitchers’ showdown as Thomas Mitchell of Hernando squared off with Brandon’s Walker Hooks.

Ultimately, behind Hook’s complete game performance, that saw him strike out seven Tigers, the Bulldogs slowly rattled Mitchell and reliever Meyer Maddox late, to get the win in game one of the Mississippi 7A Baseball Championship.

You always want to come out hot and aggressive in a baseball series like this, and Brandon did exactly that. Behind timely hitting and playing some great small ball – the Dogs bats made Mitchell work early and often.

Bulldog batters were patient and drove Mitchell’s pitch count above 50 pitches by inning number three. Despite stranding bases loaded in the first and third innings, the Dogs were able to put runs together in pairs to take a 2-0 lead early, 4-0 late, and then plate a final run in the bottom of the sixth to give some breathing room after a Luke Romine 2-run shot to cut the lead in half.

Ultimately it was Hooks command on the mound that made the difference and great defense by the Bulldogs behind him to give the Dogs a 1-0 advantage in the best of 3-game series.

You always want to get out early in big series, and now Thursday night’s matchup is a championship game for the Dogs and an elimination ball game for Hernando.
